Implementing solar power has traditionally been an expensive undertaking and, though prices have improved substantially in recent years, the tendency from the customer's perspective is still to think about solar power in terms of the cost. That is still a somewhat justified perspective if associated costs are a significant factor in the decision to go solar. Those homeowners who must consider costs when deciding whether or not to install a solar power system on their home cannot be blamed for bargain-shopping.
But there has also long been a tendency on the part of solar energy hobbyists and do-it-yourself solar enthusiasts to shop for bargains, leading them to purchasing products that do not hold up over time. As a result, they end up with DIY solar kits that often fall short of expectations. Sure, they're useful to an extent. But those who purchase consumer-grade solar kits often become disappointed in the parts and power output of these consumer-grade solar kits. Granted, there are applications for which these kits fill a need.
However, If form, function, durability, and having a product that pays for itself in both cost and satisfaction are more important than the initial outlay of cash, then perhaps you should consider spending a few more dollars with our alternative to the 45 Watt Solar Panel Kit. Indeed, our kit is just $10 - $30 more, depending on whether or not you get those consumer kits on sale or not. But, our kits include something the other kits don't. And I will get to that in a moment.
What is it? Solar panel kits allow you to generate clean, quiet energy using the light from the sun to operate DC appliances or recharge 12 volt DC batteries or, when connected to an DC-to-AC power inverter, to power TVs, lights, computers.
If you want a beginner setup and are not overly concerned quality, longevity, and performance, then other kits on the consumer market will suit you just fine. However, most hobbyists find that they want to purchase a better controller or the frame is too flimsy or the output is insufficient, factors that lead to dissatisfaction and will add to the cost of the system in both money and time.
Here are some examples of issues people are finding and reporting for one of the more popular consumer-grade kits, the Harbor Freight 45 watt solar power kit:
"I bought one of these systems almost two years ago and, living within its limitations, it works," said Alan Georges. "But its limitations are pretty severe."
Now, to be fair, there are many purposes for which these kits have proven to be useful, as witnessed by their continued popularity. If you decide that the kit mentioned above will suit your purposes, then that is good enough for us. However, we believe we have a product that is superior in the ways that really count that the consumer kits do not have, as hinted to above: their utility and their warranties.
So, what are we offering as an alternative to the consumer solar panel kits you typically see? Please read on...

Complaints about the quality of the consumer-grade Harbor Freight solar kit, which uses amorphous panels, being "shabby" or "flimsy" are common.

Expand This Kit to a Deluxe 45 Watt Solar Power System:
In order for your solar panel kit to be even more useful, you'll need one or more batteries. If you want to power AC appliances like a TV or can opener or a fan, you'll also want to grab an inverter. These two items, together with the kit, comprise a complete 45 Watt Solar Power System.
