Back in the old days, in the mountains, people made soap by simply boiling away the lighter hydrocarbons from pig fat. The only addition was lie? from wood ash. Using this idea, couldn't you simply recover the lighter hydrocarbons in a still? This seems a lot easyer than adding methanol and sodiom hydroxide.
