Photovoltaics in Buildings

Nearly everyone has seen photovoltaics in use on a house. But it is also prevalent in commercial buildings. For instance, many large retail store chains like Whole Foods Markets and Kohl's are employing photovoltaic systems to offset their electric bills.

PV in Industry

Photovoltaics are used widely in industrial applications. Probably their most visible use can be seen in the oil and gas industry where they are used to monitor flow rates and transmit other remote sensing data from well heads and pipelines. Another use of photovoltaics occurs in the telecommunications industry. Other uses include RTU/SCADA applications, seismic, snow gauge, and weather stations.

Photovoltaics in Space

Photovoltaics are an essential part of space exploration. Photovoltaics adorn satellites and the International Space Station. They are also a prominent feature on the Hubble Space Telescope, which is flanked on both sides by photovoltaic arrays.
